On Monday, 3 February, at 4:15 PM, a lecture on medical artificial intelligence will take place in the University of Tartu Delta Study Building (Narva mnt 18-2048). The speakers are Dr Frank Ursin and Dr Cristian Timmermann from Germany. The lecture, titled “Levels of Explicability: How to Overcome Epistemological and Normative Barriers in Medical AI”, is organised by the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu, Department of Philosophy, and the Estonian Centre of Excellence in AI (EXAI).

On 11 February, the University of Tartu organises the Estonian Doctoral School’s second Career Conference, The Value of a Doctoral Degree in the Job Market, in the university library.

On 21 February at 14, university members were invited to the ceremony and concert dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in the university’s assembly hall.

The National Research Awards Committee has approved the following researchers from the University of Tartu as nominees for this year’s research awards.

This year, the brand-new Tiksu’s Advent calendar “24 Tiksus until Christmas” made the Christmas month special.

Led by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Centre for Sustainable Development of the University of Tartu, a guidance material has been developed for researchers on how to conduct interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. 

At the conference “Smart Devices in Schools – Blessing or Curse?”, researchers will discuss using smart devices in schools. Everyone who is interested is welcome to attend the conference on January 30.

The 2024 Christmas card was created by Elise Nigul, a prop and stage designer and alumna of Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu.

Adult learners are welcome to participate in micro-credential programmes starting in the spring semester to acquire an additional specialisation or competence in a narrow field. Applications can be submitted until 26 January.

On 17 December at 12:15 Professor Markus Jokela from the University of Helsinki will give a public talk titled “Geographical psychology: How places matter for people”.

The first week of the traditional night library will take place this year from 9 to 13 December, when students can study in the library until midnight. In January, you can visit the night library for three weeks.

Speech by Rector of the University of Tartu Professor Toomas Asser at the ceremony marking the 105th anniversary of Estonia’s national university on 1 December 2024.

On 2 December at 14:15, Urte Laukaityte (UC Berkeley) will give a talk titled "Symptom Perception as Inference: The Scope of Functional Neurological Disorder" in Jakobi 2-336. Urte is completing her doctoral dissertation on the philosophy of psychiatry at UC Berkeley and is currently Prof. Dr. Theda Rehbock’s Philosophy Resident at Susimetsa Philosophicum. 

A day earlier, professor Andresen will be appointed Honorary Doctor in Sociology of the University of Tartu.

Today, on 21 November, at 16:00, Rector Toomas Asser presented the university’s honorary decorations at the ceremony in the assembly hall.

Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Ethics cordially invite you on Monday, 25 November at 16:15, Jakobi 2-336 to attend a talk by Dr. Ruth Rebecca Tietjen “Variations on loneliness: existential, social, political”. Dr. Tietjen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy at Tilburg University and Pof. Dr. Theda Rehbock’s Philosophy Resident at Susimetsa Philosophicum.

Starting on 25 November, the digital archive of the University of Tartu in DSpace will be called ADA. With the new name, the archive will also have a fresh homepage design that aligns with the design of the university’s website.

1 December marks 105 years from the opening of the Estonian-language University of Tartu. Traditional anniversary events will be held on that occasion.
